My Open Letter to Target

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Dear Target:

I can’t explain to you the joy that I had when I first learned that I would be able to purchase natural hair products in your stores! I told everyone! However, now it seems that joy was a little premature, because once the products were actually released, much to my chagrin, there are NO stores in the Austin, Texas metropolitan area that carry these products.

The products that I am referring to are: Miss Jessie’s, Curls, Jane Carter, and (Target’s own) Shea Moisture. But of course, you already knew what products I was referencing because in your March 31, 2010, Press Release, you did a wonderful write up about how you are expanding your beauty offerings to “include African American salon products never before offered at mass.” It is important to note that these hair products are not only beneficial to African American women but to ALL women who are genuinely concerned about the products that they use in their hair.

I feel just a bit slighted that not one of these product lines was placed in any of your NINE Austin, Texas stores (this does not include stores in the suburbs of Austin (Round Rock, Cedar Park, Bee Caves), but I didn’t see that these products were in those stores either!) As a matter of fact, the closest Target store that carries some of these products is the Harker Heights store, which is 71 miles away (as per MapQuest).

Austin, Texas is a thriving metropolitan area whose population grew to nearly 1.7 million in 2008 (source: AustinChamber.com). These numbers represent many bi-racial and multi-racial persons, in addition to African-American, Hispanic, and Caucasian. With the recent census, it is expected that these numbers will continue to increase. As a result, it is evident that the product placement is not about population because the most recent population of Harker Heights, Texas is on the City’s website as less than 30,000.

I am not sure how it was decided which “select” Target stores would sell the aforementioned products, but I would implore the company look at bringing at least some of these products to the Austin area stores. The Austin area is extremely diverse, why not continue to be one of the few companies that embrace Austin’s diversity, by providing those of us with natural hair (of all ethnicities) the opportunity to use these products?

I am a loyal Target guest, and I absolutely love your stores, please allow me and others that live in the Austin, Texas metro area the opportunity to experience some or all of these products that are designed for individuals with natural hair.

Sincerely,

L. Michelle

**This is the letter that I sent to Target, I will post any response that I receive, but please share, are these products available in your local Target stores? **

  1. I live in Houston & I've seen the Miss Jessie products @ the Target near me, but @ 58bucks its out of my price range. Maybe with that letter, you'll soon see the products on your local shelf. Love this blog. I am newly going natural, but currently rockn a sew in trying to avoid a big chop. But you never know what the summer holds (I might just get bold) lol.

  2. Hello, I live in Raleigh, NC and I was told about 2 mos ago that Miss Jessie's was now available at Target. I made no rush to get there because I learned that some of their products use petroleum & I was not pleased...but as luck would have it, I visited a local store recently where I saw their products....along with 3 other lines including Jane Carter & Shea Moisture. Miss Jessie's products are very expensive so I didn't buy any as I'm still researching which products will work best for my hair type but I did spend the $10 on the Shea Moisture deep masque hair treatment....GIRL, SHUT YO MOUTH!!! Smells good enough to eat & I used some last night as a deep conditioner (you can also use a leave in) and the results were incredible! My hair is so soft and my curls were so defined..love it!

  3. Well ya'll are lucky b/c like my letter said, NONE of the Target stores in the Austin metro area have the natural products! I do want to try to SheaMoisture though..but I guess I will have to drive 70 miles to get it *eyeroll*

In re: Miss Jessie's products...I have a love/hate relationship with all of them. Some days my hair loves them, other days it doesn't and is evident. I will be doing a product review soon on the Curly Meringue and the Stretch Silkening Cream.
