National Infertility Awareness Week & the RARE SOIL Project Website

This week, April 24-30, 2011 is National Infertility Awareness Week.

I didn't even know such a week existed until last night, and as soon as I found out, I knew that it was something that I wanted to showcase on my blogs. This is such an issue that is near and dear to me…there are so many myths surrounding infertility...I will tackle one of those myths in the next few days on my other website, Musings of L. Michelle.

Today's post is about this great website that I was recently made aware of and had the opportunity to briefly visit.

The Rare Soil Project

For over two years, the RARE SOIL Project has been working with African-American women and communities teaching about the impact of infertility and involuntary childlessness. The RARE SOIL Project works with women to help them overcome the shame and isolation associated with infertility.

The mission of the RARE SOIL Project is to offer hope, support, and information to African American women who are living childlessness not by choice (CNBC) as a result of infertility, and raise public awareness about the impact of infertility and involuntary childlessness, through education and advocacy.

FROM THE RARE SOIL SITE:

7.3 million American women have had trouble conceiving a pregnancy or carrying a pregnancy to term
1 in 8 women and men are diagnosed with infertility

The RARE SOIL Project refers to infertility broadly, including all fertility impairments:

Infertility is a medical diagnosis given when a couple has not conceived a pregnancy despite trying for 12 months.
Impaired fecundity is medical term when a woman experiences difficulties conceiving or bringing a pregnancy to term during their lifetime (i.e., recurrent miscarriages)
Involuntary Childlessness is a chronic condition that occurs when a woman/couple desires to have genetic children, but cannot conceive, or maintain a pregnancy to birth.

Because I was just made aware of the site last night, I haven’t had an opportunity to through the site completely, but for what I have perused, I think it is an awesome tool. If you suffer from issues surrounding infertility, or know someone that does, please go to this website or pass it on. I know that I will definitely be going through it more in detail in the next few days, and passing it on to some very dear blogger friends that are battling issues with conception. "Bad" Hair Day -- 4/18/11

I have completely fallen off the wagon with taking good care of my hair, and it shows! Blame the warm Texas winter and the ability to continually “wash and go”. And just me being lazy <--the real reason :( One other thing that I just thought about was that I have been working out more and when I wipe my face, I often wipe the sweat back into my hair...gotta stop doing that.

I feel that my ends look ratty and my hair is dull and lifeless. I do know that it growing, because I have a full inch of new growth (look closely at the picture, LOL). I last colored at the beginning of January. I actually don’t know when I will have time to do something to it. One thing that I have learned about my personal life is that I need to make short, attainable goals. So, for this week, the goal is to wash, DEEP condition, and twist my hair. Let’s hope I make it...it's Monday night...and I am sitting here. LOL

This morning my hair straight pissed me off. I have a new schedule at work, so now I have to be at work at 7:00 a.m. Which means I need to be out of the house no later than 6:30 a.m. Which means that I need to get up between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Actually, I need to be up no later than 5:30 a.m., but if I take a shower at night, I can get up a little later. But this morning I realized that I have to plan for the time to do my hair. This is what happened this morning. I showered last night and when I got up this morning at 5:50 a.m., I didn’t know what to do with my hair. I decided to mist it with filtered water and then attempt to pull it back into a ponytail (yes! I can finally pull my hair all the way back!!!). This was a #fail, because I had gobs of product on it from the past few days. Gel, and Shea Moisture, Olive Oil, Tea Tree Oil and just loads of all types of stuff. So what does my hair do? Nothing, it just looks a shitty mess. At this point it’s 6:20 a.m. (usually I am OUT of the house by this time, or at least walking through picking up my purse and keys) and I am stressing, so I do like any other seasoned naturalista would…I turn on the shower and stick my head under the water and using water only to “wash” the built up products out of my hair! I didn’t use any shampoo or any conditioner and I tell ya’ll, this worked well to be a "quick fix." I styled using some Blue Duchess Curl Activator Gel and EcoStyler Olive Oil Gel. It’s a little poofy and frizzy around the edges, but for the most part, I like it. And I was out of the house by 6:32 a.m. and at work at 7:00 a.m. on the dot. Now I just need to either learn to trim my ends or schedule an appt.

Did you go to Walgreen's yet to take advantage of the BOGO on Shea Moisture??? If not, WHAT are you waiting for??? If they don't have it on the shelves yet, ask the person at the beauty counter if they will be getting it in. Usually (in my experience) they have it in the store and are willing to show you what they have and let you make a purchase, they just haven't adjusted the shelves to put the product on it. I've probably stopped at every Walgreen's that I've come across and they all have it! WOOT!

Spring is finally here!!

With the warmer weather, this means that we naturals can take advantage of sunny days and rock fresh wash and go's or if you want a new style mid week and don't have the time for a full shampoo, condition, detangle sessions, a co-wash is most assuredly the way to go!

Here's a few tips that I have found helpful when doing daily/weekly co-washes:

Cheapie conditioners can be your friend. Yesterday, I told you all what my favorite "go-to" conditioners are. I have been using the V05 Free Me Freesia for the past four years and I love it. Some of my other favorites are Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and Organix Coconut. These conditioners are generally a little more watery (with the exception of HH), which works well when you are in a hurry. All of these conditioners are affordable and can generally be found at Target, Wal-Mart, or even the grocery store. When I say cheap, I mean less than $5.00.
Every co-washing session does not have to be time consuming. That's the purpose of co-washing....well at least it is for me. I co-wash in the morning before work, after working out, or any other time that I don't have time to shampoo, detangle, and deep condition (SDD). Usually to do the SDD, it takes me at least 45 minutes, but co-washing only takes however much time I chose to spend in the shower.
Ditch the towel and start using an old cotton t-shirt. I have found that this one technique has caused my hair to not be as frizzy and I don't get the drippies. I generally wrap the t-shirt around my hair as soon as I get out of the shower and then proceed to do whatever else I need to do bodywise (about 5 minutes). Once I remove the t-shirt, my hair is still damp but not dripping. LOVE it!

What is your "go-to" conditioner?

You know, the one you reach for for those daily/weekly co-washes?

As the weather starts to heat up, I find that I love co-washing my hair every few days.

My go-to conditioners are either V05 Free Me Freesia or Suave Naturals Coconut. These products are cheap, smell good, and great for my spur of the moment co-washes. I do have millions of other conditioners that I use for specific purposes: detangling or a little extra conditioning (not deep conditioning...there's different stuff for that..LOL)

So, what's your "go-to" conditioner and why do you like it?

Milan over at A Grl Can Mac, posted a great video on YouTube concerning how so many people have "rules" for natural hair. I stand with her in debunking the myth!! If it works for your hair, let it work for your hair! Rules Schmules. I've often said that when I was little, my grandmother pressed my hair weekly with the Bergamont blue or green grease (I loved the blue because it smelled better) and my hair was really thick and long.

Today a lady at church asked me if I could do her hair. I told her that I don't do hair and then she asked again if I could do her hair. I told her that I would do some research and then get with her next Sunday. She said, what are you researching? Just tell me when, where, and how much. LOL!! As well, I have a Soror coming over at later today so that I can deep condition and wrap her hair. I've been mentioning that I would like to do a little something extra....and I feel like God is speaking to me loud and clear. But I will pray one more time just for confirmation.

Natural Hair v. Relaxed Hair

Although I don’t blog as much anymore (yes, I am working on it!), I do still keep up with natural hair blogs and such through my Google Reader. One recurring theme that I continue to see in the natural hair blogosphere is the natural vs. relaxed hair debacle.

I am in a closed natural hair group on Facebook and one night I commented, “I am tired of the natural vs. relaxed hair debacle.” What followed was about 15 comments (so far) regarding my statement. It was very good dialogue and helped me to see just what some naturals think about relaxed hair. One group member stated that some people that have relaxers are not aware of the harmful effects of continued use of relaxers, and this is why she tries to encourage people to go natural. While education of the effects of relaxers is great, I also feel that just as we educate ladies on maintaining healthy hair, EVEN with a relaxer can be helpful too.

I have the privilege of advising an undergraduate chapter through my Sorority, and last year my undergrads had a forum on campus discussing the body, hygiene, hair, etc. They asked me to talk a little about hair. At that time, there were a few transitioners in the room but no 100% naturals (except for the guys). I didn’t want to turn them off by telling them that natural hair is the way to go, because *I* do not feel that everyone has within them the desire to care for natural hair. This does NOT mean that everyone can’t BE natural, because everyone does have that ability, people just don’t have the desire. SO, I talked to them about proper hair care, educated them about co-washing and wrapping their hair to use less heat, and stretching their relaxers to 8-10 weeks instead of every 4-6 weeks. After a few side-eyes, I did have some of them come up after to ask about the co-washing. Weeks later, when I was on campus again, a few told me that they had started co-washing and saw a big improvement. See what I mean?

Education is key in this hair thing whether it’s relaxed or natural!!

It reminds me so much of the scene from School Daze! Go on and swear, see if I care, good or bad hair!!!

A few ~~days~~ weeks ago, I posted a brief update about my hair and it garnered one comment that I wanted to make sure to answer. Rae, one of my newest sorority sisters and a regular here on MHIM wrote,
"I'll be celebrating my 2 yr anniversary in a couple of months and there are still some things I don't know when it comes to natural hair. And now that my hair is getting longer & fuller (yay), I'm finding myself researching AGAIN just as I did two years ago. Could you possibly give a refresher course on natural hair care? For example, what exactly does it mean to "seal in moisture?" I would like to invest in some coconut oil so that I can seal in moisture, but I don't know what that means. Your expertise is greatly appreciated. Look forward to hearing from you!"

First off, thanks so much Rae for being so dedicated to my site, even when I may not be and thanks for your confidence in me!
Whenever I co-wash/detangle/deep condition my hair, I always end the routine by adding in oil while my hair is still damp. I pour the oil in my hands and then rub it into my hair just as I would when applying product. I make sure to apply it to all part of my hair and then I finish styling it. Some of the oils that I use are:

Castor
Shea Butter Oil
Coconut Oil
Vitamin E Oil
Olive Oil

I don't have a huge preference, but when it was colder, I was using the Castor Oil pretty heavy, but now that it's warming up, I am using the Olive Oil and not as frequently. (I would probably use the Castor Oil every 1-2 days). As well, I always made sure that my hair was damp (or freshly washed) before applying the oil. Because if it's drying, the oil will just sit in my hair and be greasy, and that's NOT cute! LOL

By doing this, it helped my hair to stay soft during the day and less brittle during this unusually cold Texas winter.

Hair

It's winter and Texas actually got some cold weather this year, so I have been trying to wear my hair in protective styles. Those that know me know that's major for me because I hate doing my own hair, but I have ventured into twists, flat twists, and twist outs. It's been pretty fun and I can see the difference in growth. That could also be because I use Castor Oil daily to seal in moisture.
I have been giving a LOT of natural hair advice lately. Most people are asking what to do in cold weather, combating dryness, and styling techniques. I hope that they are listening to me. I haven't been blogging much because my hair just isn't doing much lately!! It's not shedding, it's growing, and it's moisturized. What more could I ask for??

My Open Letter to @Marshalls...(or Why I Will Probably Never Shop at @Marshalls Again)

I went to Marshalls here in Austin this evening and I had a horrible experience. I decided to blog about it because I am big on customer service...and this lady I dealt with tonight...whew wee....just read for yourself...this is what I sent through the Marshalls website. I am so angry that my lips are STILL tingling!!!! I am also posting this on my Musings blog.

I had the unfortunate occurrence to visit the Mueller location of Marshalls around 8:00 p.m. this evening in Austin, Texas. While browsing in the store, I came across the "Clearance Rack" in the Women's Department and proceeded to look through it for a black sweater or cardigan. I found exactly what I was looking for in a black button-down sweater with ruffles down the front. The label on the inside of it said, "Red" (brand). This sweater, was still showing to be $29.99 (no red "Clearance" tag was on it). However, there was another Peach "Red" brand sweater that did have a clearance tag on it. There was also a gray ruffled “Red” brand sweater, just like the black one on the clearance rack also for $29.99. I proceeded to take both the Peach colored sweater and the Black button-down ruffled sweater to the customer service desk to ask if the associate (Debra) could scan the item so that I could see, if the $29.99 price was actually correct. However she refused to, and called over Janice to tell me that the item was not on clearance. I tried to explain to Janice that there were several items on the clearance rack that did not have the red "Clearance" sticker. I even took Janice to the clearance rack to show her that there were several items that did not have the red "Clearance" sticker. She told me that the store had just had inventory today and that there may be things out of place. This does not reconcile with me, as a person that has worked in retail before DURING an inventory, I am knowledgeable that a store's management team ensures that all things are in their correct locations, so that the inventory workers can properly assess the store's merchandise. I UNDERSTAND THIS...however, what I don't understand is her lack of customer service and piss poor attitude regarding this situation. On your website, it states that, "At Marshalls we put a high value on our customers, and we want to make sure you're satisfied." I AM NOT SATISFIED tonight. Initially all I asked was that the item be scanned to show me the price. If that associate (Debra) had scanned the item as I requested and shown me that it was indeed $29.99, it is quite possible that I would have just said, well it was on the clearance rack with several other items, and you all may need to check that out. But noooo…she refused to scan the item, then Janice refused to scan the item, and after I showed Janice that there were at least TWENTY items in various sizes on the rack with no red “Clearance” tags, she tried to insult my intelligence by telling me that just because items are on the clearance rack does not mean that they are on clearance, if they don’t have the red “Clearance” sticker. She further tried to insult my intelligence by telling me that she would give me $1.00 off, which would then make the item on clearance. Marshalls…is this what you mean by “we put a high value on our customers??” Because if it is, I will not frequent this or any other Marshall brand store EVER again. As an individual that holds a Masters’ degree in Organizational Leadership and Ethics, it is highly apparent to me that managerial and high regard for customers are skills that are lacking at the Mueller Regional location in Austin, Texas. As well you may need to check the inventory roll at this store, because it’s sure to be a mess.

11 Hair Goals for 2011

Have you created any hair goals for the upcoming year? On my other blog, Musings of L. Michelle, I am listing the 35 things that I would like to do before I turn 35, and while there are some hair related things in this list, but I feel that it is necessary to actually have goals for my hair, otherwise, there is no telling what I will do with it!! So here goes...11 Hair Goals for 2011.

L. Michelle's Hair Goals for 2011

1. Get hair trimmed every 4-6 months. For 2010, I did a trim in February and then one in July. For 2011, I am planning on getting trims in January, May, and September.

2. Deep condition weekly. For 2010, I failed miserably at this. Even though I have several products that are specifically FOR deep conditioning. Come on L. Michelle, you ain't THAT busy!

3. Get a hair steamer. I would really like a Huetiful Steamer, but I have realized that it may be better for my budget to just get a regular hair steamer from another online retailer. I have found that they are a little cheaper, and with this new budget I am putting on myself, every penny helps!

4. Pay better attention to my ends. This includes making sure that I pay attention to oiling and moisturizing the ends at least every two to three days. Again L. Michelle..you ain't THAT busy! Plus, if I don't pay better attention to my ends, every time I go to do #1 (trim ends), my hair will get shorter instead of growing out.

5. Make sure my hair is covered each time I lay down. I have it bad laying down on the couch and falling asleep, with my hair uncovered and then awaking to find that my hair is a dry, ratchet-looking mess.

6. Do more protective styling.

7. Practice more styles. Right now, my signature is my poof, but as my hair gets longer, the poof is no long a poof! My hair is long enough that I can put it in in a bun, but I haven't figured out how to make it smooth yet.

8. Use up the products that I have before purchasing more. I have enough hair products to open a small store. Yes. I do.

9. Create "I Love Your Hair" cards to give to naturals that I see on the street. I already have the My Hair.....Is Me cards that I usually give people when they ask about my hair, but I read about the "I Love Your Hair" cards on the Leave in the Kinks blog, and I think it's a wonderful effort to support natural hair!

10. Create a guide for new/transitioning naturals. This is in the works. Stay tuned.

11. Be a better natural hair blogger.

Preparing for my 34th Birthday!

The end of the Christmas holiday is always significant for me because it's time to get into high gear for my birthday!!! January 16th is special to me for two specific reasons. One being that it's my birthday, and second being that it's Founders' Day for my Sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Yes, I was born to be a Zeta!!

At any rate, every since I was diagnosed with cancer back in November 2006, my birthday is of uber importance to me (even more than before), because each birthday is another year that I am here. Because of this, my birthday celebrations have been known to be grandiose occasions that require thought, time, and effort on all parties involved. For my 30th birthday, in 2007, I was laying in the bed, feeling sorry for myself, because it was snowing, I was alone, jobless, and preparing to get chemo. Looking back, I know that God was carrying me at that time because there is no way that I would have made it through that on my own. But look at me now! LOL

Below are a few pictures that chronicle birthday number 31, 32 (which was the actual celebration of #30), and 33. What in the world am I going to do for #34??? It's stressing me out! This is what I am thinking...It's a Sunday, so I will definitely be going to church that morning. It's also MLK weekend, so most of my friends are off that Monday. For church, I will wear a red dress, I don't know where this dress is, it may already be in my closet, but I will wear a red dress. LOL.

#32, which was actually the celebration of #30. This was Pearls and Pumps and this picture was taken courtesy of the Austin American Statesman. It was used in the Inauguration Edition because we were honoring Michelle Obama with the pearls.

#33, this year. Denim and Noire. We went to dinner at Pappasito's (Mexican sister of Pappadeaux).

So as you can see...this year...GOTSTA be good!!!!!!!!

Hey all! Happy Kwanzaa!!

I hope that everyone had a blessed Christmas! I know I did. I got a "new" car!!! Yay me! I am now riding in style (not that I wasn't before, but it's a small upgrade) in a 2009 Chrysler 300! It's still surreal. But with this car, I will be saving $280.00 per month!!!!! *praise dance* But that's not why I am posting. MHIM Assessment:
As I have told you all before, last Winter we had record lows here in Austin, Texas. Some days the temperature was in the teens, and I was totally unprepared for it as it related to my hair! So as a result, my hair was horrendously dry! I vowed to make sure that I would do everything I could to make sure that I didn't have a repeat this season! Well, I found it. The product that has kept my hair moisturized and supple (so far!) I use this product daily! I really can't believe it...the product junkie in me is screaming for justice! LOL
I apply it to my hair after spritzing it with a filtered water/olive oil mixture. I do the spritz thing because of course it's cold and I can't do the daily co-wash and go's that I can do in the warmer months. After spritzing, I rub the Curl Enhancing Smoothie in my hands and then apply to several sections throughout my head. Then I style and go. Ya'll. I love this stuff!!!

Tonight, I decided to wash and fully detangle my hair, and I just wanted to share with you all.

I got a new camera, so I can get back to work with taking photos! Woot!

I started by co-washing with both V05 Blackberry with Sage and Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Conditioners. I applied the V05 first to let it penetrate my hair and then I applied the HE over it in order to soften it up a little for the detangle. I then took my Ouidad Double Detangler and proceeded to go section by section detangling my hair. I haven't detangled my hair in a very long while (shh..I know...) but with these two products and this comb, you really couldn't tell!! Woot!! It took about 25-30 minutes max for me to detangle and then finish showering. Pretty good, I think. The picture below, shows my hair after I got out of the shower and combed through it one more time with the Double Detangler. I wish I had taken a picture before I combed through it again because the front was hanging well below my nose!!! My hair has grown soooo much!!! I ~~am considering~~ may let my grandmother press it when I go home for Christmas in a few weeks. She's the only person alive that I trust to press my hair with a hot comb and that's because she's been pressing hers for over 50 years! After taking the pictures below, I then applied Shea Moisture's Raw Shea Restorative Trauma Masque. I like this masque because you can use it as both a deep treatment AND a moisturizer. I am sitting here now at almost midnight, with a Target bag, shower camp, and soon a hair bonnet on my hair and this is how I will sleep. In the morning, I will get up, apply Shea Moisture's Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Hold Smoothie, style and be on my way. My dears. The Shea Moisture line has become my Holy Grail of products. I never thought I would say that. I am VERY PLEASED with this stuff AND they finally started selling it in Austin Target Stores!!! WOOT!

Hello everyone! Just wanted to come through to spread some glad tidings your way! I am in the midst of getting ready to began a new job this week, on December 1 as I posted on yesterday and I am just so excited. God is good ya'll. Don't ever think otherwise. I have been going through ~~some things~~ a lot lately...stuff that I just couldn't explain, but I now know that God was preparing me for the blessings that He has for me. The day that I got the call that I had been selected as a candidate for the new job, I was shocked, because I felt that I didn't meet the qualifications and the salary was by far way more than I felt that I deserve...BUT GOD!!!! It was puzzling to me that I had received such a huge blessing...but then I heard my Pastor say..."You will lose your mind trying to figure out how God works!" And that is the TRUTH RUTH! (c)Rev. I wanted to share with you all a sermon that I listened to just before I got that call. I actually received it from a friend on one of the worst days that I have had at my current job...so it was truly RIGHT ON TIME. It's pretty powerful, and each time that I have listened to it, it has blessed me just a little bit more. It's called the "I Am Factor" and it's by Bishop Tudor Bismark. MHIM Assessment:

So...if you will recall, I had a FABULOUS set of twists and then twist out back in October. That set was done using Miss Jessie's Stretch Silkening Creme (SSC), and my twists were beautiful for days and then my twistout lasted a good week and a half. So, any other product coming after the SSC HAD to come with the fire...I am sad to say that this product failed on my twists, and thus failed for my twistout. Usually when I do two-strand twists, my twists last at least a week without getting fuzzy. I wrap my hair up at night and in the morning I usually oil my twists using a small amount (quarter size) of Castor Oil that's rubbed into my hands. With this product, my twists lasted all of two days before going fuzzy. Matter of fact, my friend Moniek said that I was walking around looking HOMELESS!! WTH? O_o So, after being twisted for two days, I decided to go ahead and unravel them to see what they would look like...the ends were ratty and overall, my hair just didn't look like I planned for it to look!
As well, this product is a little more runny than I would like..not at all as thick as the description from the website.
I will try it again because this was my first time using it, so I have almost a full container left. So..we'll see..but for now...no bueno.

Breast Cancer & L. Michelle

If you've been here with me since the beginning or if you've read my very first post, you know that I am a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed on November 10, 2006, and for a few days...my world stood completely still. Then I was angry for about a week. After that, I refused to let cancer get me down. Now I look back and I think...I had cancer?? For real? That is..until October comes!

For my 4th year as a SURVIVOR and 1st year as a blogger, I had so many great ideas as tribute posts....but I just haven't been able to do it....you see...when this month rolls around, it's almost like information overload for me. Almost TOO much awareness and I start getting nervous. Nervous that the cancer will return, because that truly IS a possibility. I really hate cancer and it seems that every time I turn around, someone else around me has been diagnosed. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in July and she is currently taking chemo, the lady that does her hair was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer, and I was recently informed that one of my Soror's mom was diagnosed with colon cancer as well.

I tell you all of these to say..PLEASE learn your body. When I felt my lump, I KNEW that it was something that shouldn't be there and I wouldn't stop pressing until I found out what it was...even though my gynecologist told me that it probably wouldn't be anything to be concerned about O_o

A few weeks ago, I had a nose bleed so in my mind I started thinking, "Oh Lord...I have a brain tumor..." Yes, I am a bit of a hypochondriac, I always thinks something is wrong with me..but it was that awareness that helped me to find my cancer early. Now, do my friends laugh at me? Yup. And does the insurance company hate me..probably, but I could care less because if I feel that something is wrong, I am going to the doctor....Had an appointment last week, and my doctor told me it's okay to have concerns, just don't let them overtake me.

So that's it...this post has been sitting in my drafts since the beginning of the month. I just couldn't finish it. I'll do better next year...maybe. Now...I do credit cancer with giving me the beautiful hair that I have today because I do know that if my relaxed hair hadn't fallen out (from chemo) that I would more than likely still be dealing with broken and damaged hair. So anyway....

Something I Just Realized...

I was just sitting here looking at my site banner...

Pictures #3 and #5 on the banner were taken on the same night, 10/31/09.

#3 was taken as soon as I arrived at the party, so my hair was still a bit damp, but #5 was taken towards the end of the night after a little dancing and apparently my hair had dried some b/c it looks shorter (shrinkage). I think I like picture #5 better.

Two Great Natural Hair Blogs for New Naturals

Happy Friday!

As you all know, the natural hair blog community is an ever growing one.
There are a few blogs that I must see what is going on with them daily! Now this list won't include CurlyNikki, because everyone should already know about her!!
However, I wanted to make sure that you are following these two blogs, especially if you are a new natural because these ladies sorta kinda have it figured out!

1. Kinky Curly Coily Me! Jenell has been mentioned on MHIM several times. She is such an encouragement for a new natural. She's been natural for less than a year, but she has taken the time to learn her natural hair! I love this chick!

2. Robyn's Nest Robyn is another new natural and it has been truly funny to see her transition from relaxed to natural. Right before and a little bit after she did her big chop, she fell in love with wigs and faux pony poofs, but I ~~think~~ she's finally fell in love with her natural hair, and it's some gorgeous hair! Robyn's blog is not solely about her natural hair, but she's funny and interesting, and she gets the MHIM seal of approval!

A Lesson Learned...

Three weeks ago on a Thursday night, I twisted my hair with Miss Jessie's Stretch Silkening Creme and a modified Denman brush. The results were outstanding...I wore the twists for a week, then a twistout for a week, then wore my hair just pulled back last week...What I am about to share with you is a fail of epic proportions...

I will never go over three weeks without washing my hair again!! Sunday night, I decided to wash, detangle, and twist my hair while watching Brothers & Sisters on ABC. That was the plan..but it didn't go too well...

You see...combined with the fact that I hadn't really WASHED my hair in a while AND that I wore my hair pulled back last week (Gel, Gel, Gel), my hair was horrendously mad at me...THEN to add fuel to the fire...as I was wetting my hair, I looked up at the window sill and noticed that I had some African Pride Shampoo that I hadn't used in a long time.....FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL.

As I was putting the AP in my hair, I noticed that it felt hard....so I said, "Lemme check the ingredients.." and you already know...Sodium Laurel Sulfate was the SECOND INGREDIENT!! ARGHH!! The damage had been done so I started rinsing the shampoo out. My hair was sooooo hard...I put several conditioners on it trying to soften it up...Yes to Cucumbers, Totally Twisted, hell, everything and only the front (my looser curl pattern) gave way to my double detangler. The back was like, bish please...I ain't on it...so this is what I did.

Got out of the shower with my hair dripping, put a few quarter sized drops of Castor Oil into my hands and rubbed them together and started massaging it through my hair. Then I put a shower cap on my head while I finished drying, lotioning,etc. I was so scared to take the shower cap off, but when I did the Castor Oil had softened my hair in the back a little...enough for me to section off.

I gathered my modified Denman brush, a rat-tail comb (for sectioning only) and some Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding that I added Castor Oil and the Sof N' Free Olive Oil. I proceeded to section my hair in medium chunks, apply the Curly Pudding Mixture and brush through with the modified Denman. I started with the back and it wasn't too terribly hard to detangle. Then I twisted it in a two strand twists. On Monday I kept them twisted because they weren't fully dry that morning and I don't want them to be frizzy. On Tuesday, I untwisted them and looked a damn fool. They just didn't look right to me :(

Mayonnaise-Avocado

1 small jar of real mayonnaise
1/2 of an avocado

Leave on for 20 minutes. For deeper conditioning put a hot, damp towel around your head -over the saran wrap. if you have really long hair and only need deep conditioning at the ends, cut the ingredients in half and apply only to the ends and just wrap them.

Mayonnaise

1/2 cup real mayonnaise

Comb the mayonnaise through your damp hair, then wrap your head in a towel, let it penetrate for 20 minutes. Shampoo.

Special Note: Make sure the mayonnaise is real mayo and NOT salad dressing. It will dry your hair out.

OMG where did this week go??
Where did all of the posts I had in my mind go??? Ya'll, it's been one of those weeks at work...but I have a little something that I wanted to leave you with.
Last Thursday night, I did a two-strand twist with Miss Jessie's Stretch Silkening Cream (SSC) and pictured below is the outcome of the twist-out!!
What I did was co-washed with something simple like V05 Freesia and then while I was watching Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice Season Premieres last week, I whipped out my Denman Brush and went to work detangling and applying small amounts of the SSC to each twists...It took about 2.5 hours to complete...Once I got ready to take my twists done, I put some Castor Oil on each twist, then unraveled the twist. Once I unraveled, I let the twist fluff up on it's own! So see...even though I haven't been blogging, I have been working on my hair! I am off to Atlanta for the weekend for a wedding of a very good friend, but I will be back next week!! Love ya!

A few weeks ago, Cassadie over at Natural Selection posted her Labor Day Wish List, and I thought that this was super cute idea!

1. A new Camera, preferably one that takes really good pictures at night.
Let's face it...being a blogger requires that one have a really good camera. I like taking pictures of my hair, other people's hair and sights around town, so I deserve a camera that captures the moment so that I can share it with ya'll!! The last two digital cameras that I have had are still functional, but I have to tape the battery door (which also houses the SD card) to make the camera work. Can you say ghetto? What kind of camera do ya'll use?

2. An iPad. I've never been on Mac's jock..but I really want an iPad. The thing does everything that I would like to do when I am at work that I can't do because of all of the filters we have! Sometimes I just want to get on FaceBook and play around during lunch and get in on the conversations that my friends have during the day! Geez!! Now, if things work out from what I am hearing, Sprint and the other three wireless carriers together with Samsung will be unleashing the Galaxy Tab which is supposed to be comparable to the iPad. We'll see.. Do any of you have iPads or similar products?

3. A Huetiful Hair Steamer. Lord have mercy. Have you not heard about the Huetiful Steamer??? Those of us with natural hair that complain about dryness...it seems that the Huetiful steamer would answer all of our problems, as the website claims that it penetrates 5x that of a regular deep conditioning process! All of the bloggers that I follow that have tried it seem to love it! I want this little baby soooo bad. I wonder if I can get Santa Claus to bring me one....Do any of you have a Huetiful or some other type of hair steamer? If so, what are your thoughts??

~~4. A new satin cap~~ FULFILLED

5. Some cute hair accessories. I have finally learned how to wear hair accessories in my hair and look cute (and not like a teeny bopper) while doing it. The only problem is I don't have enough of them!! I want to learn to make my own so that they can be unique. I just need to find the time!! What type of accessories do you use in your hair, if any?

6. A CLEAN HOUSE. Needs no explanation. I just need to do it!!

Naturally Curly: Top 10 Transitioning Tips w/a splash of L.Michelle

I have a few friends that are in the process of transitioning and they are always asking me for advice.

However, as most of you know (those that read the first post), I didn't transition, nor did I big chop!

So it's sometimes a little hard for me to give advice from my personal experience, but I do pay attention to stories that I come across daily for those of you that have asked questions about your hair.

A few days ago, my favorite natural site, Naturally Curly, did it again and provided me with a blog post!

Here are Naturally Curly's Top 10 Transitioning Tips (with some commentary by moi):

1. Don’t set a time just yet. You don’t have to know when you’ll rock your 100% natural hair right away! Give yourself about 4 months—by then, you should have enough growth to get excited!

2. Find your go-to transitioning style. The goal is to blend two VERY different textures of hair into one. Try a bantu knot out or a natural girl’s favorite: the twist out. (These are two very easy styles and you can find several how-to's on YouTube.)

3. Detangle when hair is WET, slippery with CONDITIONER and with a WIDE-TOOTHED COMB. Always. Start at the ends and work your way up. (This is ~~good~~ great advice for naturals as well!)

4. Keep your scalp clean. You’ll have to do some experimenting, but cleanse your scalp anywhere from every 2 days to every 2 weeks.

5. Keep your hair moisturized. Dry hair breaks. Nothing beats water when it comes to moisturizing hair, but you can also add your favorite oil on top to seal it in. (Vitamin E, Jojoba Oil, Castor Oil)

6. Get used to deep conditioning! Hair masks are no longer a special treat! Naturally curly hair usually doesn’t lack protein, so stick with deep moisturizing treatments.

7. Wind down your heat usage. No need for a blow dryer or flat iron any more, right? Try air drying all of your styles instead.

8. Protect your edges. Avoid transitioning styles that put too much tension on your temples and the nape of your neck. The hair there is usually finer, thinner and more delicate!

9. Be gentle. The point where your natural texture meets your straight hair (it’s called the line of demarcation) is THE weakest part of your hair. Take your time when you detangle and style your hair.

10. Gradually cut your processed or damaged ends. Depending on the length you had to start with, get a good trim each month. Remember to use hair shears and not regular scissors!

11. Remember that your transitioning hair will be different from your freshly relaxed hair and your natural hair will be different from your relaxed hair and your transitioning hair. Take the time and learn your hear. Research, research, research! Naturally Curly has a forum and several helpful articles that can help you with pretty much all things natural. Did I say research?

I have received numerous inquiries from both new naturals,and those that have been natural for a while regarding having dryness issues with their hair in its natural state.

One person even said she's considering going back to a relaxer if she can't get a handle on the natural hair.

(I'll save my thoughts on that for another post....)

While I can't stop one from going back to a relaxer if that is their desire, I would like to put my research skills to test.

I have created a natural hair dryness survey that I would like for each of you to take.

Now, I have seen folks get into e-wars on some hair forums online in regards to body hair removal...some people (NAPtural nazis) feel that if you are considered a natural then everything should be natural..... O_o

Not here. No ma'am. I say, TAKE IT OFF!!!! The hair on my body has nothing to do with the nappies on my head!!! There is nothing cute to me about a woman raising her arms and it looking like she has Buckwheat in a headlock. As I always tell one of my favorite Twitter buddies, Robyn, "NO MORE POPCORN!!" If you don't get it now, you will later! LOL

Eyebrows
For years, I went to a barber to get my eyebrows done.
One because he was hella cute and two, because I liked the razor sharp precision that he gave my eyebrows.
Then I went to college and the lady in the Jackson State hair salon just couldn't do what the barber back at home did. As a result, I was introduced to eyebrow waxing. The first few times I got my eyebrows waxed, I cringed. I hated it but I loved the overall result, so I continued to go.
I love a defined eyebrow...Having your eyebrows done cleans your face up so much. My friends often laugh at me because I say that I look like a man about the face when it's time for me to get my eyebrows done. LOL

Legs & Underarms

I've never had problems with hair on my legs, so I can shave my legs maybe twice a year and be okay. I don't have Mo'Nique's issues at all. I have my underarms once a week. Okay, enough with the boring part.

Down Below!
NOW...the big one...*evil grin* What to do with the hair DOWN THERE??? For years, I would shave and suffer the regrowth, I even once Nair'd it. BIG MISTAKE!!! That ish burned like crazy, I just knew that I was going to have to go to the ER!! But I maintained through the night and the next day I was cool.
Because I liked the look that the Nair had given but didn't want the burning, I decided to look into...you guessed it..WAXING!!!! One year ago last month. I walked into EuroWax Center here in Austin and boldly asked for a Brazilian Wax...TAKE IT ALL OFF! One of my friends went with me, but she'd had a Brazilian before, so she was cool. I'd read online about how to prep myself (yes, there is an art to it) and I was physically ready. Emotionally...not so much.
When my name was called MY KNEES WERE KNOCKING as I walked back to the room with the girl that was going to do my services, I told her I was nervous and that it was my first time. She was really nice and personable. What I like about EuroWax Center is that they only use a wax that hardens. They do not use the wax and cloth strip. It's awesome. They apply the wax using one of those tongue depressor sticks (I can't think of what they are really called for the life of me right now). The wax is really warm. Then they let the wax harden and they apply baby powder to further separate the wax from your skin, so that when they pull, they are only pulling hair! I won't lie and say it doesn't sting but the after effect is soooooo worth it! I go monthly for my Brazilians so I guess, once you been to Brazil, there's no going back!! LOL

MHIM Changes: New Comments Format

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that I am trying out a new commenting system.

I was told by a few of my readers that they were having trouble with commenting on the site and this is no bueno for me!! I truly want to know what EVERYONE has to say, and I want it to be as simple as possible!

With that..a few of the blogs that I follow use the Disqus Comments system, and I really like it. It gives you several options for posting and if you sign up through Disqus, it keeps up with all of the comments that you make on all of the blogs that use the system. Which can come in handy for when you want to go back and revisit comments that came after you made yours. As well, I can reply directly to your messages, so you will know that I am reading and responding to your inquiries!
As a result, I have now added Disqus to my blog, so those of you that make comments will notice the change in how you can make comments.

What are protective styles?
Protective styles are sectioned styles that protect the hair from dryness, breakage, and tangling. These styles are easy to moisturize and the tension from the sections help hair to grow and stimulates the scalp.

Here are the rules…

•Your hair must be in a protective style for five (5) consecutive days.
•For two (2) days, you can wear your hair in any style that you want.
•No heat allowed! (except on your 2 free days, but would you really want to do that?) =)
•Moisturize daily with the moisturizer of your choice
•Oil your scalp 1x to 2x a week.
•Check in dates are Saturday, 9/4 and Saturday, 9/18!
•Update videos should be posted in the Nappturalite Radio Community at http://nappturalite.ning.com/video.
•The top 3 challengers will win products from Hairrogant.com!!!
•The final day of the challenge is Saturday, 9/19!

MHIM Assessment:

Okay, so I am going to start off with a few precautions. First, I have been coloring my own hair for many, many years. I have used both permanent and semi-permanent colors and I am pretty well versed on how to DIY home hair color. I am saying that because if you are a novice with hair color, I do not advise you to try to do it yourself with first time without help from a friend or professionally. Especially with natural hair. Secondly, you have to condition, condition, condition when you color your hair because coloring your hair WILL dry it out and you don't want it to start breaking because you have colored it. Thirdly, if you have thickalicious natural hair like mine, it's probably best to get at least two boxes of colors for even coverage. Yes..you read right, you need at least two boxes of color. I can probably actually go for three these days.

Okay, now on to the assessment of the Creme of Nature Hair Color. *sigh* I am very fond of Creme of Nature products such as their Lemongrass & Rosemary Leave-In Conditioner and their Red Clover & Aloe Daily Breakage Relief, but I had never tried the hair color. I am usually a Dark & Lovely girl, but the last time that I colored my hair with Dark and Lovely's Red Hot Rhythm last October, my hair was super duper dry (Sidenote: I am not solely blaming the color for this because we had and unusually frigid winter last year and I was still learning my hair, and I ~~may not have~~ did not conditioner my hair appropriately) So, when the Red Hot started growing out, I decided to try a different brand hair color. Because I'd recently won a twitter giveaway from Creme of Nature, I decided to go with their hair color line. I like for my hair to be lighter in the Spring/Summer and darker in the Fall/Winter, so I was excited to go with the Bronze Copper for my Summer color. I am sad to say that the color was not as vibrant as I had expected...it actually made my hair darker than it was from the grow out of the Red Hot. So, while I am not saying it was a total failure, it is just my opinion that my hair may need color with a little more ummph (i.e. something from Dark & Lovely). I have never had a Dark & Lovely color not turn out the way I wanted, so from now on, I will stick with what I know....However, I have decided that the next time I get my hair colored, I will have it done professionally so that I can get a color like past Wordless Wednesday Hair Inspiration Singer D'Nambi! I love her hair color and I may even consider getting this color for the Fall/Winter!! We'll see what my hair stylist thinks--yes, I do have one of those :)

Please, please, please make sure you condition, condition, condition should you choose to apply color to your hair. You don't want to walk around with your hair feeling like a brillo pad. TRUST ME!!

Gone But Never Forgotten: Aaliyah Haughton

We shared a birth date (January 16) and I still listen to her music.

As a matter of fact...yesterday I pulled out my Aaliyah CD as I was driving to work and meditated on the song, "I Care 4 U." I even changed my FaceBook status to a line from the song, "To let a fine man like you go...she must be insane." Yeah, I am going through somethings. But anyway, it wasn't until today that I realized that this was the day that we lost her nine years ago in 2001.

Here's a comment that I found regarding Aaliyah's explanation of the "I Care 4 U" song that she never got a chance to make a video for....

In a 2001 interview, Aaliyah explains the background of the song:

"Well my favorite song on the album, it's hard to pick 'cause I love them all, but if I had to pick one, I'd say 'I Care 4 U' because that song is, it's just gorgeous to me. It's five years old, Tim and Missy did that song, right when I finished "One In A Million", and I really wanted to put it in that album but, the album was already mastered and there was no way I could put it on... so we put it aside and waited, and it doesn't sound like it's five years old at all. It's just classic, it's timeless and I like what the song is saying it's a female, you know, being the strong person in a relationship, you know saying to a guy you know, if you're upset, let me wipe your tears, let me care for you, let me prove to you that I can love you, and I just really liked that, I thought it was different."

Out of respect, here is my tribute to my birthday twin, who left this world way too soon!

I can't believe that the Blogging for Branding Challenge is almost over! It's been great and I want MORE after the challenge ends next week!! Even though I have been running behind, it has been a very good experience.

For Day 23, the assignment was to Brand Blog Comments With Your Avatar. The importance of this is to have the same avatar on all posts that you comment on.

Since I read most of my blogs in Google Reader, and star those that I really like or want to look at again, this assignment is should have been easy for me. I just ran out of time yesterday! LOL So I will do this in a separate post because I want the links to get recognition and I am not sure how many of ya'll are actually paying attention to the Blogging for Branding posts.
